Portraits in Watercolour - 2 Day workshop UK
I had such a wonderful afternoon demonstrating at the Babylon Gallery in Ely a couple of weeks back, while stewarding at the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists Selected Exhibition.
It's a beautiful gallery in a lovely setting on the river, lots of light and a charming area.
This was the painting I did for the demonstration. Today it sits in my studio while I decided, what and if it needs more. I have to thank Frans Devriese for the kind use of his photograph.
I have been invited to teach at the East Devon Art Academy on the 13th and 14th October this year, so if you would like to come join me and learn how I paint just get in touch with me or the Academy. www.eastdevonart.co.uk
"In this exciting, informative workshop, Stephie will show you how to paint portraits in watercolour full of colour with an impressionistic feel. Suitable for all abilities. Stephie will share how to portray feelings and emotions in your work making it unique."

The SWA will
be staging their Annual Open Exhibition commencing with a Private View on
Wednesday 27 July when HRH Princess Michael of Kent will be presenting the
Awards. Daphne Todd OBE PPRP and an Honorary SWA , the
renowned Portraitist who won the first BP Portrait Award at the National
Portrait Gallery, will be opening the
show. We have 140 members most of
whom are professional artists who will be showcasing their work together with
that of our new Young Artists. Our
Summer Show is an Open Exhibition and we are thrilled that each year we are
able to feature talented non-member artists who, hopefully, will in time,
become Members of the SWA and therefore secure the future of the Society’s
importance in the art world.
Diversity is
our strength and in 2016 our exhibitors have provided an eclectic range of
works that will not only entertain but provide debate. Joanne Powell’s Landscape quietly and simply
reminds us of how beautiful the world can be whilst Christine Southworth’s
‘Dangerous Games’ reminds us of the horrors of war. Rebecca Fontaine Wolf’s ‘Eternal Occurrence’
is a powerful portrayal of a mother’s love for her child but with the emphasis
on the mother’s unfulfilled desires passed on to her child who then becomes
part of the cycle.

THE FEDERATION OF BRITISH ARTISTS DEBATEHOSTED BY MALL GALLERIES SW1
Mall Galleries are hosting a talk/discussion Wednesday 3rd
August at 2.30 and President of the SWA Sue Jelley will
be part of a panel who will debate ‘Women Only – is there now a growing trend
for more Women’s Exhibitions and Awards’ ?
We have all been asked about ‘The relevance of a Women’s Society today.’
Well, as far as we are concerned we are
a modern tradition and are proud to celebrate the work of female artists past
and present. Our aims to encourage and
nurture tomorrow’s artists is of paramount importance to us and since we are
now probably more popular as a society than we have ever been why not carry on
with our plans for the future?.
On the Panel with Sue
will be Eliza Gluckman MA (RCA) Curator, New Hall Art Collection, Murray
Edwards College, Cambridge University and Melissa Cassoff of Freelands
Foundation. Media Executive,
philanthropist and Tate trustee Elisabeth Murdoch has launched a £100,000
annual prize to give female artists a mid-career boost. This initiative embraces artists that other
awards overlook. Called the Freelands
Artist Award after Murdoch’s London-based arts education foundation.

I'm using Green . . .
Most people know my phobia of greens lol, but every so often you feel like you need to push into something new, so I just had to go for it and i'm quite pleased with this one. Haven't come up with a title yet, something I really struggle with, so at the moment it's "Untitled"
The greens are mixed from some new paints I got while in the US. These were the American Joe paints, mixtures of Skips green and Sky Blue...

Some progress pics along the way. Sorry about the quality but these were taken with my new iPad and haven't got used to editing with it yet.
First wash of blue and pink mixes.
Cerulean
Permanent Rose
Colbalt Blue
Nest adding in some flesh tones.
Aureloin and Permanent Rose
A touch of Burnt Sienna
Still too cold so strengthened up the flesh tones, even a touch of Cadmium Red used in very dilute washes, really warms it up.

Next the greens, The green in the face is showing a little stronger than it actually is.
A big thank you to Gunnar Salvarsson for allowing me to use his photo.

TIME TO VOTE . . . You said it was your favourite painting so I entered it into the Ken Bromley cover competition. Well I'm thrilled to say I made the shortlist..
You can vote here for your three favourite paintings.

This was painted from a photograph I took of my beautiful granddaughter Zahrah. She has gorgeous bundles of curls so I could play with all the twists and turns I saw in it. You don't always need to paint every strand but just enough to show the viewer what you are seeing.
Some photos I took along the way....

The drawing ready and masking put into the eye. I don't always do this but as I wanted to spend time experimenting on other things I didn't want to loose concentration there resulting on no highlight. You can of course go back it with Acrylic, Goauche and many other products, but then we couldn't call it watercolour, could we? ..... it is also never the same effect as leaving the white of the paper.
This is generally how I start most paintings and a style I have developed over the years, where by I paint with water. I don't was large areas as some artists do but instead draw with my brush as if it were a pencil, with clean water only.
Time to add some paint with light washes at first.
Have added some colour to the eyes. I generally have to get most of the eyes done first, If they don't work then the portrait has no soul.
A close up of the eyes at this stage, still more to do but gives me enough to know that it's worth carrying on with.
Here I called it done. I loved trying out different colours in the hair, using colour as tone in the depths of the curls.
Please take time to vote in the competition, there are many amazing artists there to choose from, each with their own style.

The Little Ballerina
After not wetting my brushes for almost 2 months over Christmas and the New Year, I was getting desperate to get painting again.
When you think you might be a bit rusty, try and relax and enjoy it. Tell yourself it doesn't matter if it doesn't turn out, after all you don't have to show anyone if you don't want to, you're doing it for you.

Almost . . . In Despair . . .
In Despair . . .
Have really got to like this square format for paintings, so tried it out recently on a couple of portraits in watercolour. This is named In Despair and is based on a ref with many thanks to Steve Evans. I do find this format gives even more focus into what's really important in the painting. The eyes . . . . The soul . . . . Your feelings . . .
Almost . . .
This one was painting just prior to "In Despair" and another ref thanks to Steve Evans. Both paintings measure approx 20 x 20 cm and 34 x 34 cm Including Mount (Matt). Originals are without any words or large signatures, these are merely for display purposes. Both are available to purchase by contacting me at info@stephiebutler.com

International Watercolor Society Cataogue . . .
I waited patiently and eagerly for the
catalogue to arrive after being informed that I would receive one. I was astounded when I learnt that one of my paintings was to be included int his book and never did I dream it would be so beautiful. What a absolute privilege
to be included in this book of so many talented artists that I have long
admired.
I would like to say a special thank you to the International Watercolor
Society Art Contest, and especially Atanur Dogan and Can Berktaş
for including my work in this wonderful catalogue, I couldn’t be more proud.
International
Watercolor Society are a wonderful organisation that has grown so amazingly in
such little time. An organisation that has bought together so many watercolour
artist around the world. Please take a little time to visit their website and
read their story.
