The SWA will be staging their Annual Open Exhibition commencing with a Private View on Wednesday 27 July when HRH Princess Michael of Kent will be presenting the Awards. Daphne Todd OBE PPRP and an Honorary SWA , the renowned Portraitist who won the first BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery,  will be opening the show.     We have 140 members most of whom are professional artists who will be showcasing their work together with that of our new Young Artists.  Our Summer Show is an Open Exhibition and we are thrilled that each year we are able to feature talented non-member artists who, hopefully, will in time, become Members of the SWA and therefore secure the future of the Society’s importance in the art world.

Diversity is our strength and in 2016 our exhibitors have provided an eclectic range of works that will not only entertain but provide debate.  Joanne Powell’s Landscape quietly and simply reminds us of how beautiful the world can be whilst Christine Southworth’s ‘Dangerous Games’ reminds us of the horrors of war.  Rebecca Fontaine Wolf’s ‘Eternal Occurrence’ is a powerful portrayal of a mother’s love for her child but with the emphasis on the mother’s unfulfilled desires passed on to her child who then becomes part of the cycle.

Ten members have very kindly donated a piece of work to be auctioned at the Champagne Reception on Tuesday 26 July 6.30 – 8.30 when Dame Zandra Rhodes will be our Guest of Honour.  The proceeds of the auction will go to this worthwhile charity.  Re-named BREAST CANCER NOW their aim is to wipe out this disease by 2050 and with recent good news they will now fulfil their promise. THE FEDERATION OF BRITISH ARTISTS DEBATEHOSTED BY MALL GALLERIES SW1

Mall Galleries are hosting a talk/discussion Wednesday 3^rd August at 2.30 and President of the SWA Sue Jelley will be part of a panel who will debate ‘Women Only – is there now a growing trend for more Women’s Exhibitions and Awards’ ?

We have all been asked about ‘The relevance of a Women’s Society today.’  Well, as far as we are concerned we are a modern tradition and are proud to celebrate the work of female artists past and present.  Our aims to encourage and nurture tomorrow’s artists is of paramount importance to us and since we are now probably more popular as a society than we have ever been why not carry on with our plans for the future?.

On the Panel with Sue will be Eliza Gluckman MA (RCA) Curator, New Hall Art Collection, Murray Edwards College, Cambridge University and Melissa Cassoff of Freelands Foundation.  Media Executive, philanthropist and Tate trustee Elisabeth Murdoch has launched a £100,000 annual prize to give female artists a mid-career boost.  This initiative embraces artists that other awards overlook.  Called the Freelands Artist Award after Murdoch’s London-based arts education foundation.

Derwent Art Supplies Award 2015

Absolutely thrilled to be awarded the Derwent Art Materials Award 2015 at the Society of Women Artists 154th Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London for my painting "Why". The award was presented to me by the Patron, HRH Princess Michael of Kent. To have my parents there with me to see me receive my award made it a very special day, I can’t tell you how proud I felt.

Epping Forest Art Exhibition Summer show 2014

The show will be up until Sept 28^th.

The View 

The View is the new visitor centre near Chingford, with interactive displays telling the story of Epping Forest and regularly changing art and history exhibitions. The perfect place to start your exploration of the forest, you can even join two waymarked trails right from the back door.

Opening times

The View is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm all year round including Bank Holidays; it is closed on Christmas Day.

Step back in time... 

Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, right next to The View, is a unique example of a surviving timber-framed hunt standing still surrounded by its medieval royal hunting forest. Visitors to the Hunting Lodge, built on the orders of Henry VIII in 1543, can today enjoy exhibitions on Tudor history and soak up the atmosphere of this incredible historic building nearly 500 years after it was first built.

Opening times

Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm all year round including Bank Holidays; it is closed on Christmas Day.

The Hunting Lodge is also closed on the following dates for staff training:

Associate Member of The Society of Women Artists

I can't tell you how thrilled I was to receive a letter back in May to inform me that I had been elected as an associate member of The Society of Women Artists. I have a great admiration for this society and have been submitting work each year, each year being fortunate in having some work selected for their Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London, along with selling each year.

The Society has a limit of 150 members so to be part of this is such a great honour. Each year of being selected has been a great achievement in itself and made me even more determined to work harder for the next in the hope one day the dream will come true. This year it happened and it still feels somewhat of a dream. With all 6 paintings being accepted, three will be hung at this years exhibition.

I find inspiration on a whole new level since submitting work into various exhibitions, even though on many occasions not succeeding. The initial feeling of disappointment, wondering if it's all worth it and wanting to give up soon changes to a renewed determination to succeed, with the realisation that my work needs to be of a better standard if I want to make it, so I begin again. This in turn leads you into experimenting, pushing your boundaries that bit further each time. I would always encourage any artist to do this, keep trying, dreams do come true if you work hard enough.

Watercolour & Ink Tiger . . . " Panthera "

I've often used ink on watercolour paintings in the past , although I also love it just as it is, especially when used for architecture. Not having used it for some time I got started on it again recently after seeing a wonderful pen and wash "Helping Hands" by a member of Painting Friends forum, Sharon Williams. which you can see by following the links in the text.

What grabbed me most about Sharon's painting was how it wasn't the typical "Ink & Wash" that is too often a watercolour painting outlined neatly with an Ink pen. While there is nothing wrong with that, I just loved the way the wash overran the lines into other areas and how that gave Sharon's work that painterly look that really appeals to me.

 This is my attempt at a different take on "pen & wash"

So out came the ink ... and a straw....
                                      The initial attempts resulted in the painting "I belong to Africa" which you can see in an older post by clicking on the linked title. Although I loved that painitng and thoroughly enjoyed painting it, I still wanted a more randomness to the ink work. This is where those odd workshops and lessons come into use, the ones you don't always immediately use afterwards, but the parts that appealed and inspired seem to sit in the back of your mind just waiting.

 I had taken a short watercolour and Ink course at the local adult education center a few years back, a very enjoyable course run by a talented teacher, but never really used much of what I had learnt. The one thing I enjoyed the most was the use of other implements for the ink work, giving up a bit of control may be scary sometimes but it can have some wonderful effects and becomes part of what goes towards making a painting "yours".

Selected for Mayfair Art Exhibition

I'm absolutely thrilled to have had three paintings selected Essex Art Club and to be showing in Mayfair again. I have been busy doing various things of late, but this is one exhibition I do my utmost to enter. The Essex Art Club is one of the two Art Societies I belong too, a wonderful inspiring and friendly organisation

Above are the three paintings that were selected. These will be for sale along with some unframed original paintings in the browser. In a while I'll be off to help hang the Exhibition, another experience I'm very much looking forward too. Do try and get along to see the exhibition during next week if you are in London, it's a lovely gallery with a varied collection of contemporary and fine art. See previous post for details.
